As a child, Christmas was always a special season. I’m sure it was for you as well. I remember setting up the Christmas tree. Because of allergies, ours was aluminum. We’d pull the tinsel-like branches from their brown paper sleeves and poke them in the holes on the trunk. We’d hang ornaments, and when finished, turn on the spotlight with the color wheel.
So why am I talking about Christmas in the heat of summer? Because it helps us understand the fourth commandment about keeping the Sabbath day holy. Christmas is observed to remember Jesus’ birth and all the festivities mark the day as different. The same is true of the Sabbath. It reminds us of God creating the world and ceasing work makes it different. Listen to Exodus 20:8-11, “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”
As you approach the weekend, don’t just make the Sabbath different from a workday. Stop and remember the Creator of heaven and earth.
