For many of us, summer is a time to load the car and drive to a vacation spot. It’s also prime time for road construction. Have you found yourself stuck in slow traffic while on the way to the grandma’s, the beach or the mountains? People often jockey for position. We all want to get past the slowdown as quickly as possible. We shift lanes trying to find the fastest. Some people cut others off in their quest for prime position.
Summer is also a favored time for weddings. People gather at churches, wineries or other venues to celebrate the vows a man and woman make, pledging to hold the other in a special place or position in their life. The bride and groom promise exclusive devotion to each other.
Summer driving and summer weddings can also help us understand the first commandment. Exodus 20:3 says, “You shall have no other gods before me.” Like the wedding vow, God demands an exclusive position in our lives. No other power or authority can stand in God’s place. We must not let anything else be worshiped, honored and loved in the way God deserves.
But our hearts are often like that summer road construction zone. Multiple things compete for first position in our hearts. But only God deserves to be first. Remember, the commandment is not simply forbidding worship rituals of another religion. It also commands us to place God as the ultimate power and authority in our lives.
