Do you ever ignore important information? Nutritionists tell us to eat a balanced diet and avoid certain fats and excess calories. Public service announcements describe the link between diet and various diseases. At our checkup, the doctor or nurse advises us on dietary choices to reduce our bad blood test results. Yet many of us ignore all the dietary advice, or at least cheat on it.
The same thing happens with prayer. Jude 1:20 says, “But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.” (NIV)
So, what is praying in the spirit? It is an intense prayer surrendered to the will of God. We don’t always know what to pray for, but we can be surrendered to God’s will. Romans 8:26-27 says, “the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.” (NIV)
I know how tough it is to eat right. We grab fast food or a candy bar and an energy drink. We’re just too busy to eat healthy. And we think we’re just too busy to pray more than a quick word or sentence. But today, take the time to pray in the Holy Spirit.
