Breathe Praise – Sat – 22-07-09

Can you think of anything that people do on a continual basis? I know, if you’re the mother of small children, you have some ideas. Some children continually talk. Or they constantly bicker with their siblings. If you have a teenager, they seem to continually look through the fridge for something to eat. Or they constantly stare at their phones. Look outside the home and you can find ideas as well. Some politicians seem to continually lie. Gas prices continually rise. And our society seems to continually go from one problem to another.

But really? None of these things are truly continual. Children and teens sleep. Gas prices sometimes go down, though I’m having a hard time remembering when that last happened. About the closest thing people truly do on a continual basis is breathe. We might hold our breath, but not for long. No matter what we’re doing, we keep breathing.

So if the bible tells us to do something continually, we should think about it like breathing. Something we do without thinking. Something we can only pause for a moment or two. Something we do with rhythm. What are we told to continually do? Listen to Hebrews 13:15-16, “Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise–the fruit of lips that confess his name. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” (NIV)
