Carried Away – Fri – 22-07-08

On May 22, two men and a two-year-old child sat in a rubber raft at a boat dock on Lake Washington in Seattle. High winds and waves carried the rubber raft away from the dock. Neither the two men or the two-year-old child wore a life jacket. The wind blew the raft through the choppy water until it pushed against the floating I-95 bridge. Waves then filled the raft and dropped the three into the icy water. The Seattle Police Department Harbor Unit rescued the three, none of whom suffered serious injury.*

Keep this story of being carried away in mind as you listen to Hebrews 13:9, “Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings. It is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace, not by ceremonial foods, which are of no value to those who eat them.”

We sometimes fail to recognize the destructive power of false teaching. The people in the rubber raft were threatened by forces they couldn’t control. One minute they were at the dock, the next drifting across the lake. In the same way, we think we are safe and in control. But if we’re not careful, we can start believing false teaching that denies God’s grace. It in turn can drive us to spiritual injury or ruin.

Strengthen your heart with the grace of God, not eating ceremonial foods and other riturals. Trust in Jesus and the forgiveness he freely gives.
