Stand Solid – Thu – 22-07-07

Have you ever watched a skyscraper rise from the ground? I’m not talking about a snap shot. I’m talking about watching the project over time. I used to drive by a construction site. I learned that skyscrapers don’t rise from the ground, they rise from under the ground. The first phase is digging a deep hole. Then steel beams and tons of concrete are arranged in the hole to provide a stable base for the building. They drive girders down to anchor the foundation to bedrock. The taller the building, the more important a stable foundation is.

The tallest building in the world is in Dubai. The foundation consumed over 110,000 tons of concrete and 192 steel piles driven more than 164 ft deep.* The building, called the Burj Khalifa, was featured in a Mission Impossible film. I can’t even imagine the weight the foundation must bear, let alone the stresses resulting from the wind load on a building more than half a mile high.

We also need a stable foundation for our lives. We often bear a lot pain and hardship. The turmoil in our  culture buffets us. Do you feel the stress of inflation, shortages and political rancor? How can we stand though all the stress? That’s easy. Trust in Jesus. He’s as solid as a rock. As Hebrews 13:8 says “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (NIV)
