Have you ever made a trip to the emergency room because you did something stupid? I have! Once I worked on a project that required grinding off a small area of a metal rod. I had to lay under the area to do it effectively. What was my stupidity? I didn’t wear safety goggles. You guessed it. I had to go to the emergency room to get a filing out of my eye. Thankfully, no permanent damage was done.
Many safety devices are useless if they are not in place. The same is true of spiritual armor. Listen to Ephesians 6:14, “Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place.” (NIV)
Can you imagine an ancient soldier owning a breastplate and refusing to wear it into battle? He wouldn’t last long, would he? The same is true of the spiritual battle. The righteousness that defends us is not our own. It is the righteousness we gain from Jesus. As Romans 1:17 says, “For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last.” (NIV) You see, we trust in what Jesus did to restore our relationship with God, not in our own goodness.
A physical breastplate protects your core, your vital organs. In the same way, Jesus’ righteousness protects the core of our spiritual well-being. Make sure you are covered by his righteousness.
