Fathers – Wed – 22-06-22

I enjoy contemporary Christian music. Many songs celebrate the fatherhood of God, but a few talk about being a father of children. Steven Curtis Chapman’s haunting piece “Cinderella” brings tears to my eyes, as it recounts a daughter growing up. But it seems contemporary Christian music generally lacks songs that celebrate the faithfulness of our parents or forefathers. At least, I couldn’t find any when I searched.

I also like old hymns. One old hymn celebrates the faith of those who went before. “Faith of Our Fathers” was written in by Frederick William Faber in 1849 to honor martyrs who were faithful unto death.*

We are blessed by the faith of those who go before us. I had great examples of faith. My father, father-in-law and grandfather were all followers of Jesus who were faithful to him and to their families. I’ve been blessed by their example. For many people, it is not their immediate family, but a father figure who has blessed their life as an example of faith.

Psalms 22:4-5 celebrates both the faithfulness of God and the Jewish forefathers. It reads, “In you our fathers put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them. They cried to you and were saved; in you they trusted and were not disappointed.” (NIV)

Remember, your faith is an example for those who follow. Remain faithful to God and love the people around you.
