When my children were toddlers, I sat one night in the recliner, deeply engrossed in a novel. I don’t remember the title, but it was probably sci-fi or something by Tom Clancy. One of my children stepped up beside the recliner and asked for a drink of water. Without taking my eyes from the book, I automatically answered, “No.” Elaine heard my reply from the kitchen. She broke my concentration and asked if I knew the answer I had given. I’m sorry to say, I didn’t even remember the question. When I understood the request, of course I wanted to give my child a drink of water.
Thankfully, God is never distracted. He always hears our prayers. Listen to Luke 11:9-13 talk about God’s response to our prayers, “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” (NIV)
Our God is a father who hears us and gives us good things!
