Memorials – Wed – 22-06-01

High on a shelf in my basement sites a special box. The box is sealed inside a plastic bag. Inside the box is another bag, which holds a dress. It is the wedding dress Elaine wore when she married me. It has been sealed away for a long time. It is a memorial of a special night and the commitments we made to each other. We usually don’t think of clothes as memorials. But I bet you keep something in your closet that reminds you of a special occasion.

The high priest in the Old Testament also wore a piece of memorial clothing called an ephod. It had special gem stones. Listen to Exodus 28:9-12, “Take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel in the order of their birth–six names on one stone and the remaining six on the other. Engrave the names of the sons of Israel on the two stones the way a gem cutter engraves a seal. Then mount the stones in gold filigree settings and fasten them on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as memorial stones for the sons of Israel. Aaron is to bear the names on his shoulders as a memorial before the LORD.” (NIV)

Take a moment to look through your closet. Do you have anything that reminds you of God’s love or of a special time with him? If so, stop, and remember and give thanks to God.
