Memorials – Mon – 22-05-30

Today is Memorial Day in the United States. It is a day to honor and remember the military personnel who died while in service. Most people also extend it to remember all family members who have died. Cemeteries are tidied up and flowers are placed on graves. In many communities, the American flag is flown, guns are fired in salute and bugles play Taps. Many people forgo traditional celebrations and just head to the lake for the first long weekend of summer. A famous car race is also held. Many people break out the grill and cook their favorite steak, hamburgers or hot dogs.

Exactly how Memorial Day started is debatable. Over two dozen places claim to have been the first to observe it. It definitely was observed following the Civil War. In 1971, a Federal law took effect moving it from May 30th to the current observance on the last Monday in May.*

This week the podcast will look at different memorials mentioned in the bible. Memorials are very important, for we often need to be reminded of important sacrifices and victories that others have won for us. Today, I urge you to hear the words of Paul in 2 Timothy 2:8-9, “Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained.” (NIV)
