Promises, promises! Have you noticed that people make a lot of promises? Many politicians make promises in order to get elected, then never deliver. But we all do it. Here are some common promises:
- The check is in the mail.
- I’ll always be here for you no matter what.
- I’ll give you a call later.
- It won’t happen again, I promise.
These are often called pie crust promises – easily made and easily broken. It’s why people invented oaths for the court room. You know, “I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”
God also makes promises. But he is different than us. God keeps his promises! One of the most important promises God made is recorded in Genesis 12:1-3, ‘The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”’ (NIV)
God fulfilled this promise. Abram, whose name was changed to Abraham, was prosperous. His descendants became the nation of Israel and settled in the promised land. And all people on earth were blessed when Jesus, the descendant of Abraham came. Praise God, for he is a promise keeper!
