I’ve been fascinated by the story of Noah’s ark for many years. Evidence exists in the geologic record that a global flood actually happened. Also, many cultures around the world have some type of story about a flood. If you want to have a fun day and enjoy learning about some of this evidence, I highly recommend you visit the Ark Encounter in Kentucky, just south of Cincinnati, Ohio. This replica of the ark is a great museum.
The story of the ark from Genesis recounts the destruction of the world by water. But why did God unleash such a flood? What could possibly justify such destruction? Genesis 6:5-8 says, ‘The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. So the LORD said, “I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth–men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air–for I am grieved that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.’ (NIV)
This passage reminds us of two important things about God. First, he punishes evil. But second, it is possible to find favor in God’s eyes and escape judgement. And that, we know, is possible through Jesus.
