History is vital to understand the present. One cannot fathom why the United States government took the form it did without understanding the relationship between the United Kingdom and it’s American colonies in the decades prior to the American revolution. Issues such as the taxation of the colonies without allowing them representation in Parliament led to the revolt and shaped the US government. Other historical events since that time have also impacted the United States.

In a like manner, we can’t fully understand life or what Jesus accomplished without understanding the history recorded in Genesis. When Adam and Eve sinned, God pronounced judgement upon them and the serpent. But he also made a promise. Genesis 3:15 records God’s words to the serpent, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” (NIV) God promised the offspring of the woman would crush the serpent’s head.

This promise foreshadowed Jesus’ death and resurrection, which was the ultimate victory. Hebrews 2:14 says this about Jesus, “Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death–that is, the devil.” (NIV)

As we live focused on the day-to-day routines of life, it’s easy to lose sight of history. Take a moment to thank God for the victory he promised which Jesus has achieved.
