When my son was a toddler, he climbed onto the bathroom counter and began playing with a pair of tweezers. He did something that tweezers are not intended to do. He stuck the prongs into the electrical outlet. A spark flashed between the prongs, melting part of the tweezers. My son survived, thank God, but he received a jolt from the experience.
We all realize that things must be done according to the design, or pain will result. This is true about marriage as well. Adam was alone in the Garden of Eden. Genesis 2:21-22 says, “So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.” (NIV) Adam was thrilled. Verse 24 says, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” (NIV) This verse is often read at weddings.
One of the timeless foundations of human life is marriage and family. When done according to God’s design, it is a tremendous blessing. When it is not, pain will result. Today, thank God that in his wisdom he designed marriage to bless the husband and the wife and provide a loving home for children.
