Mothers – Thu – 22-05-12

Quick, think of a famous mother. Was it difficult to do?

Perhaps the most famous mother in the bible, after Eve, would be Mary, mother of Jesus. I love what Luke 2:19 says. At the birth of Jesus, after the visit of the shepherds, it says, “But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” (NIV) Isn’t that just what mothers do? Their hearts are filled with love and memories.

Then look at Mary when her son was a man. She still prompted him to take action! John 2:1-3 says, ‘On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”’ (NIV) Of course, we know how that story ends! Jesus performed a miracle.

We also see Mary at Jesus’ death. John 19:25 says, “Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.” (NIV) I’m sure you know of mothers who did all they could and were as close as possible when their children tragically died.

Mary shows all the traits of good mothers. Filling her heart with love and memories, prompting her adult child to do good things and supporting her child in his suffering. Thank God for mothers!
