One of the things that makes life interesting is that we are all different. Some are tall, others short. Some are bubbly and excitable, others calm and collected. One thing I’ve noticed is people are also different when they talk. Some are like the old cow poke. They say few words. What they do say, they drawl out slow. Then there are others who fire off words faster than a machine gun. One wonders how they breath in that torrent of speech! Then there are the people who talk so much, you can’t get a word in edgewise. They think a conversation is a monologue.
I wonder if God notices the different ways people pray? He must, because Jesus did. Hear what he said in Matthew 6:7-8, “And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” (NIV)
What’s the lesson here? Prayer is not the mindless repetition of words and phrases. Nor does the number of words somehow improve the odds of a favorable answer. Prayer is a meeting with God where we speak to him. We admire him, confess our dependence, thank him for blessings and request his help. Saying words without focusing on God is not prayer. Remember, when you pray, you speak to God.
