Jesus’ Ministry – Thu – 22-04-14

When my adult children come home, we often remember events from their years growing up. Often we remember holiday meals at Grandma’s house. They can tell stories about sleeping on the living room floor with cousins, or getting in trouble for opening their Christmas stockings in the middle of the night. One very memorable story is when the house was filled with cousins and almost everyone got the stomach flu! We have many warm memories of holidays and dinners at Grandma’s.

As we remember the high points of Jesus’ ministry, one of our memories is of a meal. In fact, the meal was about remembering. On the night before his arrest, Jesus celebrated the Passover. It commemorated the deliverance of the Hebrews from Egypt.

But Jesus also changed the meal to form a memorial of his death. Matthew 26:26-29 says, ‘While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father’s kingdom.”’ (NIV)

Jesus created this simple observance so we could remember him. I hope you can gather with other Christians and remember Jesus through the Lord’s Supper!
