Jesus’ Ministry – Tue – 22-04-12

If you made a list of the high points of Jesus’ ministry what would you include? Oh, we’d all include his death and resurrection. Would you also include the Sermon on the Mount or the feeding of the five thousand? Which parables or miracles would you included? Now, let me ask, would you include his temptation by Satan?

This event was probably not high on your list, right? Immediately after his baptism, Mark 1:12-13 says, “At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.” (NIV) Of course, Matthew and Luke give us details on some of the specific temptations he endured. But the key point is that Jesus was tempted, but did not sin.

Why is this a high-point? Because Jesus needed to be tempted and he needed to be sinless. Hebrews 4:15 says, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are–yet was without sin.” (NIV) Jesus needed to be sinless to fulfill the redemption mentioned in 2 Corinthians 5:21, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Today, remember Jesus’ temptation and his obedience to God!
