Most people who know anything about Jesus know that his followers are supposed to love others. 1 John 4:7-8 says this, “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (NIV)
This passage tells us four things while urging us to love one another. First, love comes from God. He is the source. That’s because God is love, which is the second fact. The remaining facts are that those who love have been born of God and they know God.
Remember, this is not talking about the casual, self-centered type of love. You know what I mean. I love sour cream donuts! But that is not the love mentioned here. This passage talks about the self-sacrificing love that benefits another. That is the type of love God is. He so loved us that he sent his only son to die for us.
Loving one another sounds like such a simple thing. But it is profound and a challenge. That’s why we need God as the source of such love. He gave us the Holy Spirit to produce fruit in our lives. And love is the first item mentioned. Perhaps that’s why the greatest commandment was to love God. That is needed before we can love our neighbors. Today, love God and love others!
