Have you ever visited a gym or fitness facility? You know, one that has rows of machines, such as treadmills, stair climbers and weight machines. Have you noticed that the people on those machines are huffing and puffing? Some may be talking on the phone, but nobody looks happy. I have never seen the same facial expressions at the gym as I do at a party!
So, why do people put so much energy and devotion into working out, if it isn’t that fun? Well, they do it to accomplish a fitness goal. All the work against the resistance will reduce their weight, improve their chances to live longer and or prepare them for a sport they do enjoy.
Perseverance is like working out at the gym. It isn’t pleasant, but is contributes to a spiritual goal. Hear what Romans 5:3-4 says, “Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.” (NIV)
Do you want hope in your life? These verses tell us that one way hope is produced is by persevering through suffering. I know. No one wants to suffer. But I hope you realize that your suffering may be a workout in the spiritual fitness center!
