Romans – Sun – 22-02-27

What do you picture in your mind when you hear the word unity? What do you see when people are united? Think about their hands. Do you see handshakes or people holding hands? How about a team on the sideline before the game stacking their hands together and shouting in unison “Let’s go”? I have a memory from my youth, probably from Scouts, of everybody putting their left hand into a circle and grabbing the thumb of the next person. As a teen at summer camp, we would stand in a circle and hold hands for an evening prayer. However, each of us would cross our arms in front of us before clasping hands.

It is one thing to see unity. But what do you hear when unity exists? Well, you don’t hear arguments, that’s for sure! If you’re talking about followers of Jesus who have unity, you will hear all praising God. Listen to Romans 15:5, “May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (NIV)

Did you note where the unity comes from? According to this verse, God gives a spirit of unity to those who follow Jesus. In this divided and bickering world, be sure to follow the spirit of unity God has given!
