Have you ever looked at a list of the top movies of all time? Usually, such lists are focused on a particular genre. For example, I found one on the Internet Movie Database website listing the 30 best movies about love stories. According to this list, the best movie about a love story is still the classic Gone With the Wind.
Although not a movie, I believe one of the greatest love stories of all time is the story of Ruth from the bible. It displays love and dedication in different relationships, not just a romantic relationship. The story begins when an Israelite family travels to a foreign land to escape famine. While there, the father dies and the two sons marry. Ten years later, the sons die. Naomi, their mother, decides to return to Israel. She encourages her daughters-in-law to stay behind and find new husbands. One does. The other, Ruth, pledges to stay with Naomi with these words in Ruth 1:16, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” (NIV)
Ruth pledged to stay with Naomi, even though she would face poverty. Ruth abandoned her prospects of a better life because of her love for Naomi. May Ruth inspire us to show love and dedication to others rather than pursuing our own interests!
