I once supervised a team of people in my workplace. They were a great team and made me look good through their efforts! I could assign tasks to my team members. They in turn would perform the work. This is similar to the military. When an officer gives orders, he has confidence that they will be carried out. However, in the military, soldiers don’t have a choice. They must obey the authority of the chain of command. And, they can’t quit if they receive an order they don’t like. Unlike my team members who could quit at any time.
Jesus once healed the servant of a Roman military officer. The servant was near death when the officer sent for Jesus. The officer was a good man and knew he didn’t deserve for Jesus to enter his house. So, he sent friends to tell Jesus to just command the healing from afar – just like a military commander gives orders. Luke 7:9-10 tells us Jesus’ response, “When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, ‘I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.’ Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.” (NIV)
What was the faith of the officer? He knew Jesus had the authority to command the healing.
We too, must remember that Jesus has been give all authority in heaven and on earth. So, trust him!
