Miracles – Wed – 22-01-12

Every now and then, some tweet or post on social media “goes viral.” In other words, it spreads quickly, like a fire in a dry, overgrown California forest. Sometimes the viral post is a cute video, such as a puppy. Or it may be someone’s dance moves. Often, it is something amazing, like a death-defying stunt or near miss.

Did you know that news about Jesus also went viral? Oh, they didn’t call it that back in his day. But talk of Jesus’ miracles spread quickly and widely. One example is in Mark 1. Jesus was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum on the Sabbath. People were impressed with what he taught. They were also impressed with the authority he displayed as he taught. That’s when a demon possessed man interrupted him. Jesus commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man, and it did. Verses 27-28 say, “The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, ‘What is this? A new teaching–and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him.’ News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.” (NIV)

Let’s face it, if you saw a miracle, you’d tell others, wouldn’t you? But things go viral, not because everyone experienced it, but because people pass on the news. So, to whom will you pass on the news of Jesus’ miracles?
