Christmas is coming! So, this week the podcast will focus on the announcements of Jesus’ birth and the reactions of those who heard the news. We’ll look at these announcements in the order they were given. Of course, the first to hear the specific news of Jesus’ birth was his mother, Mary.
Luke 1:26-27 says, “In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.” (NIV)
You remember the story, don’t you? Gabriel told Mary she would bear a son and name him Jesus. Jesus would be God’s son and the messianic king. Mary questioned how this could happen, since she was a virgin. Gabriel explained that God would work this miracle through the Holy Spirit.
Notice also that Gabriel made no mention of Joseph, the man engaged to Mary. This was life-changing news for her! Do you remember Mary’s response? She said, “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said.” (Luke 1:38 NIV) She was willing to serve God, even though it would change all the dreams and plans she had.
What an example for us! As you celebrate the miracle of Christmas this week, commit yourself to serving the king that the holiday celebrates. Declare like Mary, that you are the Lord’s servant.
