James – Sat – 21-12-18

Have you ever been surprised by the power of something? Maybe you bought a new car and stomped on the accelerator and were surprised by the car’s rapid response. Or how about electricity? We don’t stop to think about what is flowing through the lamp cord plugged into the wall. But if the cord is frayed, and we touch it and get shocked, we suddenly understand the power!

Would you be surprised by the power of prayer? James 5:16 says, “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” (NIV) Verses 17 and 18 provide the example, “Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.” (NIV) The passage in James also says, “Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray.” (5:13 NIV)

So many people fail to pray. I think one reason is they don’t think it will accomplish anything. How can saying a few words to God do anything? They forget that the act of prayer is not the power any more than the lamp cord is the power. The power flows from God. Prayer is the way to seek God’s power in our lives. If you don’t pray, you’re not looking for His power. Take some time today to seek God’s power through prayer.
