Faith Heroes – Thu – 21-11-11

When visiting a hall of fame, you can be amazed by all the great athletes who played the game. Sometimes people will also debate who was the greatest of all time. They’ll discuss factors likes player statistics, the relative strength of competition in different periods and rule changes over time. Usually, there is no one player all agree was the greatest.

I don’t think that’s the case in our virtual hall of fame about faith in Hebrews 11. The epitome of faith was Abraham, the father of the Jewish nation. When looking at his treatment in the chapter, he is mentioned for four different things. It’s like his display in the museum is four times bigger than the average hero! Ok, we’ll see that Moses is also mentioned for three things, but I’m sticking with Abraham as the greatest of all time!

What were the first two things that displayed Abraham’s faith? Verse 8 says, “By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.” Then verse 9 mentions the second, “By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents.”

Like Abraham, we live as strangers in this world, for our citizenship is in heaven with Christ. Like Abraham, we long “for a better country – a heavenly one,” just as Hebrews 11:16 says.
