Wisdom – Sat – 21-10-30

In the world of sales, a distinction is made between features and benefits. A feature is something the product has or does. A benefit is what the customer gets from using the product. For example, a washing machine may have a large capacity. That is a feature. But what the customer gets is time savings because the machine will do more clothes in less loads. Another feature is load monitoring. These sensors provide the benefit of using less water, and therefore, lower water bills. The feature of quiet operation is very beneficial because you don’t have to worry about waking the children, a roommate or neighbors.

The same distinction between features and benefits can be made when talking about wisdom. For example, the book of Proverbs contains short sayings that teach about ethics and how to live a good life. They are simple and easy to understand. Those are all features. For some of the benefits listen to Proverbs 2:12-15, “Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse, who leave the straight paths to walk in dark ways, who delight in doing wrong and rejoice in the perverseness of evil, whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways.”(NIV) These verses explain that the benefit of learning the wisdom of God is the ability to recognize and avoid deceptive people. Now, isn’t that a good reason to seek God’s wisdom?!
