Some of Jesus’ miracles were a bit scary. Take the one recorded in Mark chapter five. The first five verses set the scene: “They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.”(NIV)
Wow! This was a scary dude! Jesus cast the demons in the man out into a herd of swine. The pigs then rushed into the Sea of Galilee and drowned! When the residents of the area heard of this miracle, they came out to see Jesus. It says, “they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.” (NIV)
Actually, they didn’t need to be afraid if they were followers of Jesus. This miracle shows us that Jesus is greater than all powers – angelic or demonic. If he is for us, who can be against us?
