Fruit of Goodness – Fri – 21-07-02

Do you remember as a child when your parents left you with a baby sitter? Maybe it was your grandparents, an aunt or a teenaged neighbor. I remember that when my parents left me and my siblings with a sitter, they always said something like, “You be good while we’re gone.” Now why would they say that? Maybe they knew us all too well! We probably needed a reminder to follow the rules!

But you know what? When I had my own children, I found myself saying the same thing when we left them with a sitter! “Now, you be good while we’re gone.” I don’t think this reminder  is given because children are basically bad. I think this reminder shows the universal desire of parents to have well-behaved children. We want our kids to be good!

God is surely the same. He wants us to be good. As Micah 6:8 says,

“He has showed you, O man, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.”(NIV)

Justice, mercy and humility are what God says is good. But God doesn’t just give us reminders of how to be well-behaved. He also gives us the power to achieve it. He gives us his Spirit to dwell within us. His Spirit produces the fruit of goodness in our lives.
