How do you celebrate something good? Do you throw a party and invite friends and family over? Or do you go out to a fancy restaurant? Do you celebrate with cake, or pie, or ice cream – or all of the above? Do you celebrate with family, a few close friends, or as many people as possible?
Now that you are thinking of celebrations, when was the last time you held a joyous celebration? When your team won? When a new baby or grand child was born? When you tied the knot in marriage? When you got a big promotion or a great new job? How about when you studied the Bible?
Uh, what? You don’t think of Bible study as a joyous thing? Well, listen to David’s joy at the word of God. He said in Psalm 19:7-8 (NIV):
The law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving the soul.
The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy,
making wise the simple.
The precepts of the LORD are right,
giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the LORD are radiant,
giving light to the eyes.
Now, I must admit, I don’t throw a big party when I learn something from God’s word. Maybe I’m missing something. Am I viewing God’s Word as the traffic laws of life, or as a message from my loving heavenly Father? If we want joy, then one source is understanding God’s Word.
