Fruit of Love – Mon – 21-05-10

What is love? Poets and songwriters have long asked this question in their search for inspiration. They have come to different conclusions. For some love is an intense feeling of euphoria. For others, it’s simply biochemistry. Still others combine emotions with the desire to care for another. Some even ask the question “what is love,” wondering whether it can really be found.

When the Bible speaks of love in Galatians 5:22-23, it is the first in the list of qualities God’s Spirit produces in those who follow Jesus. In fact, it can serve as the summary of all the fruit of the Spirit. Jesus said in John 13:35, “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (NIV)

So what is this distinguishing mark of a Christian? What is love? The word love used here translates a specific word in the original language. That word’s basic meaning is devoted care for another. It is less about the emotions felt and more about the choice to care. It is less about what one gains and more about what one gives. It is not about the inner experience, but about the outward action. It is the choice to give to and care for another.

Today, lift your focus. Look around you and freely choose to give to another without expecting anything in return. That’s how we show we know Jesus!
