Whatever Is Admirable – Mon – 21-04-12

One of the first things I do each day, is check the news. I pull out my phone and scan the news headlines on a few different sites to see what happened overnight. I also listen to the radio while I shave. I play a local talk show that discusses local and national news stories.

The unfortunate thing about the news, is it focuses on the negative. The mantra of newspapers used to be “if it bleeds, it leads.” I think now the mantra must surely be, “if it outrages, post it on our pages.” Whether radio, television, print or online, news organizations are looking for an audience. They want to grab attention and focus on sensational and negative things because they work. There is something in us that makes us stop to see a car wreck or other disaster. That’s why news organizations focus on bad news.

If we are going to focus on whatever is admirable, as Philippians 4:8 encourages, we need good news. What we need is a news source like the old radio broadcast of Paul Harvey. He talked about the major news stories, but also reported some heartwarming and admirable things as well. I remember a regular feature was to mention the couple celebrating the longest wedding anniversary in the country on each day.

Well, without Paul Harvey’s radio program, I guess you and I will need to do our own search for good news or “whatever is of good report.” When you find it, share it with others.
